Karl & Glees up for monthly awards

8 January 2014

Karl Robinson and Stephen Gleeson have both been nominated for Sky Bet League 1 monthly awards for December.

Robinson is one of four managers nominated for the Sky Bet League 1 Manager of the Month award after he guided the Dons to three wins out of a possible four in December, all without conceding a goal.

Despite having a lengthy injury list, the 33-year-old led his young side to victories against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Port Vale and Crawley Town by a combined scoreline of 7-0. The impressive run of form also saw the men from MK1 close the gap on the playoff places to just six points.

Robinson, though, faces competition from three newly-appointed managers; Sheffield United boss Nigel Clough, Bristol City chief Steve Cotterill and Brentford’s Mark Warburton.

Gleeson, meanwhile, has been nominated for the Sky Bet League 1 Player of the Month award following his impressive return to goal-scoring form in December.

The Irishman found the back of the net on two occasions last month with two stunning long-range efforts against Port Vale, firstly, and then away at Crawley Town on Boxing Day.

Gleeson’s energetic performances in the middle of the park helped him lead the Dons to three victories in December. The 25-year-old was suspended for the side’s only defeat in the month, away at Brentford.

Also nominated for the award are Jose Baxter of Sheffield United, Walsall’s Paul Downing and Brentford midfielder Sam Saunders.

The Manager of the Month award is decided by former Charlton Athletic manager Alan Curbishley, Football League Chief Operating Officer Andy Williamson, League Managers Association Deputy CEO Olaf Dixon and npower Sponsorship Manager Emma Collins.

The Player of the Month panel sees Emma Collins joined by Wolves legend Don Goodman, BBC Sport’s Mark Clemmit and The Football League’s Head of Communications, John Nagle.

The winning manager and player will be revealed on Friday.
