Karl Robinson believes his side’s performance in Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship home opener with Preston North End warranted a positive result.
“I don’t think we deserved to win the game but we certainly didn’t deserve to lose it,” Robinson told the media afterwards. “We were much better in the first half so to find ourselves 1-0 down was a little bit disappointing, especially in the way the goal came about.
“The disappointing thing for us is the one time we did really get carved open, they took their chance. Simon Grayson is a really good manager and he’s got a very good team - they came here to win a game of football and that’s what they did.”
He continued: “The players’ mentality and patience to build their way into the game was sensational at certain stages. I feel they should take an awful lot of credit for the way they played against a very good side.
“As Lewie said to the players in the dressing room, all you can ever do when you’re losing is make sure the team you’re playing against has to defend right until the final whistle and we did that.
“The players certainly tried and gave their all to the cause but it just wasn’t to be but we’ll go again.”
