Karl: A step in the right direction

28 July 2014

Manager Karl Robinson sees Sunday’s victory over Nottingham Forest as a ‘step in the right direction’ for his side ahead of the new season.

The Dons beat the Championship outfit 1-0 yesterday afternoon thanks to a well-taken goal from midfielder Ben Reeves, in their first match back at stadiummk since May.

Despite the intense heat and a higher division opponent Robinson’s men looked organised and impressive throughout the contest and they deservedly saw out the win – their sixth of pre-season so far.

Speaking to MK Dons Player, the Dons boss said: “It was a good run-out. It was important we had this type of game, the level of quality increased and the intensity picked up a little bit. The players picked up as well, they performed probably better than they have done all pre-season.

“It’s a step in the right direction for us. There are things still to tinker with and change but as a whole, the fans and everybody inside the stadium can walk away feeling very pleased with the performance. It was a good afternoon for us.

He continued: “It was nice to get a win back at stadiummk as it’s been a while! There were a lot of positives to take out of the game and hopefully we can build on this moving forward.

“I’m not getting carried away, there is still a lot of work to do. We’ve got two more weeks to work on a few things and maybe bring in some more new players. Hopefully we can do that and move on from here.”

As well as an ideal pre-season test for the Dons, Sunday’s clash also doubled-up as Dean Lewington’s Testimonial Match and Robinson was pleased with the respect and gratitude shown by the 4,121 fans inside stadiummk towards the club captain.

He added: “It was perfect. I said to the players before the game, the reason why he is captain is because he’s got the Football Club at his heart, he respects everything about the Club and its heritage and he believes in where we want to go.

“I couldn’t ask for a better captain and I’m very fortunate to know him as a person as well. I thought the fans showed the respect they have for him too.”
