Karl Robinson says he was delighted with his side’s display in the win over Port Vale, especially coming off the back of a three-week break from league action.
The Dons, thanks to a third minute goal from Carl Baker on his first home start, secured a valuable three points at stadiummk on Saturday, to extend their unbeaten run to six games and close the gap on first-placed Bristol City to just six points.
“It was a pleasing performance,” Robinson told MK Dons Player after the game. “It’s always hard, the first game back from a break, but we’ve gained three points so we're pleased.
“I thought we looked comfortable for large parts of the game and I thought the players conducted themselves really well. Our final ball wasn’t overly great today but the back four kept their ninth clean sheet of the season, when we only had 12 all last season.
“I’m really pleased and I want them to use this momentum going into the game on Tuesday. We’re certainly heading in the right direction.”
Baker’s decisive strike on Saturday was his second in as many games, with both goals coming against the Valiants, and Dons boss Robinson was keen to praise the winger for both his performances on the pitch in the past two outing as well as his work off it.
“Carl Baker has been magnificent the last two games and he’s showed me why he is a good player. He’s a professional in the way he conducts himself around the place.
“I also thought Dele and Potts worked their socks off and made it difficult for (Port Vale) to have any impact on the game, but all my players deserve a lot of credit. They’ve worked hard the last two weeks.”
Aside from the goal, the other main talking point was the red card shown to former Don Chris Lines, who was dismissed shortly before half-time following an incident with Dele Alli – one which left the 18-year-old on the floor holding his head.
“It was a sending off but I want to make clear that, that’s not Chris Lines’ mentality, that’s not who he is. It’s something small that we’ll brush over but it’s not who he is as a character. He’s a good person and a solid footballer.”
