Dons support the Marcus Rutherford Foundation

3 September 2015

The Dons teamed up with title partners Suzuki GB to help support the Marcus Rutherford Foundation prior to last Saturday’s clash with Birmingham City.

Karl Robinson’s men showed their support by warming up in t-shirts promoting the Foundation before donating them to avid fans inside stadiummk.

The t-shirts that were worn were designed by a fan who won a competition set up by Suzuki - they were then put into production with 10% of the proceeds going to the Foundation. The shirt also proudly incorporates a personal stamp designed by Marcus, which is also a trademark for the Foundation.

The Marcus Rutherford Foundation was set up after Marcus lost his battle with Leukaemia in 2012 at the age of just 22. The Foundation exists to research the causes of cancer in young adults and provide those undergoing cancer treatments at University College London Hospital and other institutions. It offers advice and support, access to technology, internet, DVDs and other facilities that may not otherwise be available.

Michael Rutherford, trustee of the Foundation, said: “Change is long overdue. More health checks, testing and screening is needed in schools, colleges and universities because thousands of wholly-innocent young adults are being diagnosed with cancer every year.

“Tragically, the diagnosis can come far too late and we are doing all we can to help. We really appreciate the support from the MK Dons and the public who have bought Marcus’s shirt so far – it does make a difference”.

Over the last three and a half years, it has directly handed many thousands of pounds in grants and equipment to patients in need. Now, it is determined to raise awareness, offer more advice, and carry out additional research into the causes of young adult cancer

An important further development was the donation of its ‘Battle Bus’ which has been specially converted and can be seen at many events around the UK including the recent Reading Festival.

The battle bus is equipped to the highest NHS standards and therefore has the potential to serve as a clinic capable of carrying out everything from annual health checks to blood testing. Its professional, multi-purpose vehicle status also means that it’s superbly equipped to transport emergency supplies of blood and blood products.

The Marcus Rutherford t-shirt is available to buy in sizes S-XXL priced at £28.00 and can be purchased at any Suzuki dealer, via the Suzuki website and also on eBay!
