Dons Ladies keep pressure on league leaders

12 April 2016

MK Dons Ladies kept the pressure on league leaders Crystal Palace with a come-from-behind victory at their Gillingham counterparts on Sunday.

The result was even more impressive for the Dons Ladies, who had started the game slowly and subsequently found themselves behind after just three minutes. Kallie Balfour regained possession, ran into the penalty area and cut the ball back for Jade Keogh, who hit a low shot past Emma Kirby and into the net.

However, the Dons Ladies responded well and levelled just after the half-hour mark – Charley Clarke getting in front of the hosts’ defenders and turning home a drilled free-kick into the corner of the net.

Gillingham had the first chance of the second half as they aimed to re-take the lead but Chelsea Wallace fired wide after receiving the ball from Emma Tune.

The Dons Ladies, though, made the most of their opportunity to hit the front when Leah Cudove raced on to a through-ball, broke away from her marker and placed the ball under the out-rushing Gills keeper on 68 minutes.

There was a real ebb and flow to the game as it entered the final stages and chances came at both ends – Balfour shot off target for Gills while, at the other end, Cudove couldn’t quite put the icing on a strong comeback.

MK Dons Ladies: Emma Kirby, Sam Gillings, Charley Clarke, Clare Hollingsworth, Leanna Doyle, Heather McDonnell, Charly Wright, Vicky Holland, Leah Cudove, Charlotte Murphy, Rosie Anderson.

Subs: Zoe Lander
