Dons duo involved in important wins

30 March 2015

No Dons players featured on the international stage this past weekend but two were involved in squads which earned valuable victories.

Will Grigg, who played 60 minutes for Northern Ireland in their Vauxhall Challenge Match against Scotland last Wednesday, was an unused substitute as Michael O’Neill’s side beat Finland 2-1 to move a step closer to Euro 2016 qualification.

Two goals from striker Kyle Lafferty secured a fourth qualifying win for Northern Ireland, who are now four points clear in second place - the final automatic qualification position.

Lee Hodson, who featured as a substitute in the friendly with Scotland, wasn’t included in O’Neill’s 18-man matchday squad for Sunday’s qualifier at Windsor Park. Ben Reeves was unavailable after returning home due to injury.

One player who was named in the matchday squad but didn’t feature was Lewis Baker, who was an unused substitute in England Under-20s 2-1 triumph over USA at Plymouth Argyle’s Home Park.

The Chelsea loanee watched on as the Young Lions secured an unbeaten 2014/15 campaign thanks to goals from John Swift and Kwame Thomas.

Baker had captained the side to a penalty shoot-out victory over Mexico at Barnet FC’s The Hive four days previous.
