Dons defeat Luton in Dev Cup

18 February 2015

A brace from Kabongo Tshimanga and a stunning late Ben Tilney strike saw the Dons’ Development side come-from-behind to beat Luton Town 3-2 on Tuesday.

The men from MK1 fought back from two goals down to seal a second straight victory in the Final Third Development League Cup - one which moves them to the top of their Southern Group A table.

Director of Youth Mike Dove, who was taking charge of the fixture with the first-team also in action on Tuesday, named a youthful side which included one four professionals - Harry Hickford, Kabongo Tshimanga, Giorgio Rasulo and Ben Tilney.

It was the hosts, who boasted eight professionals in their starting XI, that started the brightest and they took the lead after just six minutes through Charlie Walker, whose right-footed finish beat Andrew McCorkell in the Dons goal.

Tshimanga, currently on loan at Aldershot Town but eligible to play in the fixture due to the terms of his youth loan, then went close to an immediate equaliser before Rasulo sent a fizzing shot inches past the left-hand post.

The Hatters, though, doubled their advantage six minutes into the second half when Alex Wall glanced a header past McCorkell.

Despite the scoreline and their experience disadvantage, Dove’s young outfit refused to give up and in the 63rd minute they pulled a goal back courtesy of Tshimanga, who, in turn, took his tally for this season’s Development League Cup campaign to three.

The exciting striker then increased that total with 10 minutes to go to level things up at 2-2, before Tilney won it for the Dons late on with a superb long-range strike which gave Luton keeper Craig King no chance.

Having played all five of their group fixtures, the Dons must now wait to see whether their points total of nine will be enough to ensure a top-two finish and a place in the semi-finals.

Starting XI: McCorkell; Tingey, Hickford (c), Hunt, Tilney; Hadden, Weston Wiltshire; Rasulo, Tshimanga, Vaughan.

Subs: Wyant (GK), Steele, Brittain, Owusu, Palmiero.
