Dons back in stadiummk action

28 July 2015

MK Dons returned to stadiummk on Tuesday evening as they entertained La Liga side Getafe.

The game provided another chance for the squad to get more minutes under their belts with one of those – Joe Walsh – scoring his first goal for the Club in a 3-1 reverse.

The Dons paid a moving tribute to Andy King pre-match, with the players warming-up and entering the field in ‘King 7’ t-shirts before watching a video tribute to the 58-year-old and the stadiummk crowd honouring the great man with a minute’s applause.

After a strong start on the field, the men from MK1 found themselves behind when Alvaro Vazquez headed past David Martin on five minutes. 0-1

Rob Hall, playing just hours after returning on loan for the season, was looking lively on the right and only last-ditch challenges on two occasions denied him as the Dons looked for a quick response.

Some good play from Carl Baker and Daniel Powell provided a chance for Ben Reeves, who was crowded out at the crucial time midway through the half.

Karl Robinson’s men were seeing more of the ball but a stubborn Getafe defence were making it difficult to create any clear-cut chances.

However, it was 2-0 to the visitors on 33 minutes when Emi Buenida tapped home after Martin couldn’t deal with Pedro Leon’s right-wing cross.

The Dons reacted well though and defender Joe Walsh reduced the arrears within five minutes, nicely glancing Reeves’ corner past Guaita. 1-2

Buendia doubled his tally for the evening and made it 3-1 in the process on 52 minutes when he fired a stunning 25-yard strike past Martin.

Powell almost capped off a fantastic move on 63 minutes but, after latching on to Darren Potter’s ball and cutting inside his marker, he flashed an effort inches over the top.

The 24-year-old was proving to be a menace for the Getafe defence, this time putting his marker under pressure, winning the ball and subsequently a free-kick – unfortunately nothing came from the resulting set-piece.

Cody Cropper made his stadiummk bow with just over 15 minutes remaining, while Tom Hitchcock was also introduced in place of Hall, with Powell dropping back to midfield.

Substitutions continued to occur which, whilst offering minutes, disrupted the flow of the game.

There were no more chances of note but Getafe did end the game with 10 men after Alexis was shown a red card for raising his hands to Samir Carruthers.

MK Dons: Martin (Cropper 76); Spence (Hodson 64), Kay (Tilney 88), Walsh, Lewington (Hickford 88); Potter, Carruthers; Hall (Hitchcock 76), Reeves (Rasulo 84), Baker (Bowditch 64); Powell.

Goal: Walsh (38).

Attendance: 4,124.
