Luke Chadwick scored his first goal for Cambridge United on Saturday while defender Tom Flanagan made his debut for Stevenage.
Chadwick played a one-two with Andy Pugh before slotting home from the 12-yards as the U’s beat Southport 3-1 to strengthen their Skrill Premier play-off position heading into the final five games of the season.
The 32-year-old midfielder, who has made four appearances since moving to the R Costings Abbey Stadium, was also named man of the match for his commanding performance in the Cambridge midfield.
Meanwhile, Flanagan came off the bench to make his first appearance for Stevenage in their 1-0 defeat to Shrewsbury Town at New Meadow.
The 22-year-old replaced Darius Charles at half-time but couldn’t prevent Boro from slipping to a defeat which keeps them at the bottom of Sky Bet League 1, four points adrift of safety.
In Sky Bet League 2, goalkeeper Ian McLoughlin helped Newport County earn an impressive 1-1 draw against promotion-chasing Chesterfield.
McLoughlin was beaten by a cross-cum-shot from Jimmy Ryan for the game’s first goal but pulled off a number of important saves to deny the hosts a second before Max Potter slotted home a late County equaliser.
The result keeps the Welsh outfit seven points clear of the relegation zone in 14th.
Finally, young defender Harry Hickford played his second 90 minutes for Chelmsford City in their 4-3 defeat to Boreham Wood.
The Dons’ Head Apprentice, in his first spell away from stadiummk, made his debut for the Clarets in their goalless draw with Havant & Waterlooville last weekend but couldn’t help them repeat the feat; instead the Essex club remain in the relegation places although they do have two games in hand.
