Benik Afobe was keen to thank team-mate Ben Reeves for allowing him to take the penalty which ultimately proved the difference in the victory over Fleetwood Town.
After Carruthers was pushed to the floor in the 84th minute of Tuesday’s contest, Reeves handed the in-form Afobe the ball, and the striker on loan from Arsenal made no mistake to secure a valuable three points for the Dons, who moved to fourth in the Sky Bet League 1 table as a result of the win.

“There was a bit of pressure because it was 1-1 and I knew it could be the final chance of the game but as a striker you thrive off that pressure and it was fantastic to see it go in.
“We wanted to win in front of our home fans as well and fortunately we’ve come away with the three points, so we’re happy.
“It was a really hard game, they came with a game plan and they defended well. It was working for them, but we kept on going and Kyle (McFadzean) cropped up on the edge of the box and scored like a midfielder.
“We’re a fantastic squad and we know that even if we go 1-0 down, we’ve got plenty of talent to equalise and even go on and win the game. We had a lot of possession and we knew that once we got our chances it was just about finishing them, and luckily we did.
“The manger said to us that these are the games we’ll look back on at the end of the season. A few teams have dropped points in our league so it’s good that we’ve caught up on a few of them.”
Attention for Afobe and the Dons now switches to Doncaster Rovers this weekend and a chance for Karl Robinson’s men to close the gap on second-place Peterborough United even further, after drawing to within three points of the Posh on Tuesday.
“We know Doncaster are a good team as they’ve just come from the Championship. They’re going to try and win playing at home, but if we stick to our game plan and play to the best of our ability then I don’t see why we can’t come away with three points.”
