Antony Kay believes he and his team-mates can hold their heads up high following their performance against the league leaders last weekend.

MK Dons proved more than a match for Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon until Liam McAlinden headed home Kevin McDonald’s cross in the 81st minute to condemn them to a 1-0 defeat.

However, the centre-back insists the team can take a lot of confidence from their showing in front of the record-crowd of 20,516 at stadiummk.

He told MK Dons Player: "Wolves are top of the league for a reason - they can grind out one-nil wins. Although they put us under pressure in the second half, I thought we showed what we’re about.

"It’s all about chances at the end of the day and they took theirs with that header near the end. The goal came from that second phase of the free-kick and if we’d have got past that, we might have been able to settle more and not end up chasing the game.

"When we went down to ten men and they scored I thought we reacted well and we could have even equalised at the end with the deflection off Brendan. Overall, I think we can look back on that game with our heads held high.

"Just look, at the end of the game, at the team we had on the pitch and the age of it, it just shows you that we’re down to the bare bones. But we’re still fighting and we’ve still got a very good spirit in the team."

The result on Saturday saw the Dons slipped down to 9th in Sky Bet League 1 and remain three points adrift of sixth-placed Peterborough United but Kay believes there is still a chance to end the year in the play-off places.

"I don’t think we can count ourselves out of it until it’s mathematically impossible," the 31-year-old added. "We’ve got Coventry in our next game and with them being only half an hour down the road now it’s a massive incentive for us to go there and get the three points."
