Robbie Neilson felt his MK Dons side did enough to win their Sky Bet League One clash with Chesterfield on Monday.
Despite a dominant second-half performance at the Proact Stadium, Neilson’s Dons were held to a goalless draw in their first fixture of 2017 and while pleased to come away with a point and clean sheet, the Scotsman was frustrated not to have a victory to celebrate.
“It was a frustrating day because we did enough to win the game,” he told MK Dons PlayerHD.

“I thought at the time it was going in!” Neilson said. “It was a great connection and it was unfortunate it didn’t go in.
The Dons went closest to winning the clash in the 71st minute when Nicky Maynard produced a fine save out Ryan Fulton with a stunning acrobatic effort.
“It’s hugely important keeping a clean sheet and the most pleasing thing for me is that we limited them to no shots on goal. When you go away from home in this league, you have to stop the crowd getting behind their team and stop it being an open, end-to-end game.”
“I thought we were the better team. There were periods in the game where we played really well and we managed to get through the lines – it was just that final bit of quality when we got through.
“I’m pleased. Obviously we wanted six points because we want to take maximum points all the time but we have to be realistic because we don’t have a huge squad so we can’t rotate and bring fresh legs in.”
Monday’s draw means the Dons took four points from their two games either side of New Year’s Day – a reasonable total for Neilson, whose squad remains short on numbers.
