Joe extends goal run

19 April 2017

Heading into the final two weeks of the season without a league strike to his name, Joe Walsh was beginning to think his impressive run in front of goal was coming to an end.

Since 2012/13, Walsh has found the net on at least once occasion every campaign – an impressive record for a centre-back but one which looked set to be broken this season.

However, with 53 minutes gone in Monday’s clash with Southend United, Walsh climbed high to meet a Ben Reeves corner and powered a header past goalkeeper Christian Walton, keeping his goalscoring going for another 12 months.

“I was getting a bit worried that I wasn’t going to score a league goal all season because I normally get a few,” Walsh told MK Dons PlayerHD.

“All season I’ve been doing well to get on the end of set-pieces but the keepers have been making good saves or it’s been going just wide.

“Today, I just got above my man, got power behind it and the keeper couldn't keep it out – I’m pleased to get the goal.”

He added: “We’re really pleased to have won – everyone’s buzzing in the dressing room too.”

“You know you’re going to be in for a game when it’s like that and it was good game. It was a good battle and I thought we dealt with it well.”

“We knew they were going to play it long to their strikers and look to take chances, so we worked on that in training.

Walsh’s goal helped the Dons to an impressive win over the play-off chasing Shrimpers, who never really looked like taking the points at Roots Hall.
