Martin: Blackpool display our best so far

MK Dons beat Blackpool 3-0 at Bloomfield Road...

16 September 2019

Russell Martin labelled Saturday’s display at Blackpool as the side’s best so far this season.

MK Dons beat the Tangerines 3-0 at Bloomfield Road to secure their first away league win of the campaign and make it three straight victories in all competitions.

“It was a good day,” Martin told the media after the success. "It was probably the best performance of the season.

“It just clicked. We had been working hard in the week and it helped that we didn’t have a game in midweek. All the things we worked on, came off which is testament to what we’ve done in training a swell as the lads’ application.

“There are loads of positives. We defended well as a team and worked really hard. The clean sheet was really important for us and we deserved it. We were overdue one, I felt - we should have got one against AFC Wimbledon. We’re getting more solid.

“It’s a result which puts us closer to where we want to be in the league. I feel like we’re picking up some momentum now. The season had been a bit stop-start but that’s three wins in a row in all competitions now.

"We’re starting to get into rhythm and we need to continue that. We’re not going to get carried away. There are still things we need to work on and we just need to keep building and keep improving.”

Martin opened the scoring in Lancashire with his first goal of the season and his second since arriving at the Dons earlier in the year. The centre-back dedicated the strike to his daughter, who was celebrating her fifth birthday on Saturday.

“It was my daughter’s birthday - she’s turned five so it was nice to grab a goal. I’m dedicating that to her.

“It’s always nice to score and from a set-piece, which we hadn’t done this season. The manager was pleased about that.”
