Jordan Houghton hopes MK Dons can use the 2018/19 promotion as a platform to kick on to bigger and better things.
In his first season at Stadium MK, Houghton helped the Dons secure an immediate return to Sky Bet League One, featuring 48 times in all competitions and scoring twice.
The midfielder was delighted to enjoy success early in his Dons career but believes the Club won’t rest on its laurels heading into the 2019/20 campaign.
“We’ve spoken as a team about how well we did last season but also that we don't want to undo the good work - let’s go again next season,” Houghton said in an exclusive interview with iFollow MK Dons.
“Some people might have viewed it as a bit of a gamble for me to drop down to League Two but I could see the direction the Club was heading in. There was a lot of talk, at the start of the season, about just settling the ship but I was coming here to get promoted.
"This Club was way too big to be in League Two so while it feels good that we’ve done it, we also knew that this is the bare minimum we had to achieve.
“Now, we’re going to kick on and go again. Hopefully we can take the positives out of the season and learn from the negatives. Hopefully we can really push on.”
In order to push forward next season, one area where the Dons must improve, according to Houghton, is the form over the Christmas period.
Following a 1-0 reverse to Colchester United in the match prior to Christmas Day, the side went on to lose seven of their next nine games - falling to eighth place in the Sky Bet League Two table as a result.
While Houghton & Co were able to recover and eventually secure promotion, the former Chelsea man knows that they are unlikely to get away with a similar run next term in League One.
“The games over Christmas were nowhere near good enough, points wise or performance wise. That’s something we need to look at for next season, certainly, because we won’t be afforded that dip in form.”
