Willo starts in Wales win

12 October 2016

George C Williams helped Wales Under-21s finish their UEFA European Championship qualifying campaign on a positive note in Armenia.

The MK Dons loanee was on the field for 65 minutes, playing his part in Wales’ 3-1 victory over their Group 5 rivals from Eastern Europe.

Wales dominated the first half in Yerevan and opened the scoring early on through Ellis Harrison.

Geraint Williams’ side had chances to extend their lead before half-time but Armenian goalkeeper Arman Meliksetyan was in good form for the hosts.

Wales eventually doubled their advantage midway through the second half courtesy of Aram Shakhnazaryan’s own goal but Armenia reduced the deficit within a minute when Artem Simonyan beat Michael Crowe.

Armenia threatened an equaliser in the closing stages but it was the visitors who would score the crucial next goal – Tom O’Sullivan, creator for the opener, getting himself on the scoresheet late on to secure the win.

The victory sees Wales finish their qualification campaign fourth in the table on 16 points – not enough to earn them a place in next summer’s finals in Poland.

George C Williams, who missed the Dons’ last two matches because of this international commitment, will now return to Stadium MK to prepare for this weekend’s trip to Scunthorpe United.
