Report: Beaten by Burnley

Promotion favourites Burnley delivered a clinical display under the lights at stadiummk.

Joey Barton, Sam Vokes, Andre Gray, Matt Lowton and George Boyd were on the scoresheet as the Clarets ran out 5-0 victors over the 10-man Dons - three of the goals coming after Antony Kay was sent-off in the second half.

Karl Robinson reverted back to the side that beat Cardiff City 2-1 on Boxing Day – their last outing at stadiummk, where the Dons had won five from five before kick-off.

The Dons started strongly and enjoyed the better of the possession and territorial advantage in the opening exchanges.

Their first real chance arrived on 11 minutes following some nice build-up play – the move ending with a dipping Rob Hall effort which finished on the roof of the net.

However, the Clarets took the lead against the run of play three minutes later when Joey Barton robbed possession, drove goalwards and finished with aplomb.

Robinson’s side responded through a shot from the lively after good wing play by Josh Murphy while, at the other end, David Martin comfortably gathered a long-range from Michael Kightly.

Murphy once again attacked down the left on 25 minutes, nut-megging Matt Lowton and driving at the Burnley defence before unfortunately just over-running the ball.

As the game past the half-hour mark, the Dons continued to carry a real offensive threat and some superb trickery from Hall set-up Nicky Maynard, who tested Tom Heaton from 15 yards with a fierce effort.

The visitors also looked dangerous, although their forays forward were less frequent – the closest they came was from an Andre Gray drive which was deflected behind.

Murphy saw a shot saved and Ben Reeves one blocked before Antony Kay headed wide as the Dons finished the half stronger.

But Burnley extended their lead in the opening minute of the second half, Sam Vokes bursting through the Dons defence before cooling slotting past Martin.

A good spell of Dons pressure culminated in a shot-cum-cross from Murphy which Maynard almost got on the end of at the back post.

The men from MK1’s mountain got bigger on 64 minutes when Gray glanced Joey Barton’s free-kick past Martin from close range.

Robinson’s men fell further behind on 71 minutes when Lowton fired home substitute George Boyd’s cross from the left.

Kay was shown a red card with just over 15 minutes remaining before Boyd got on the scoresheet himself with a fine finish into the roof of the net.

Starting XI: Martin; Spence, McFadzean, Kay, Lewington (c); Potter, Carruthers; Hall (Forster-Caskey 74), Reeves (Powell 60), Murphy; Maynard (Church 74).

Unused subs: Cropper, Hodson, Walsh, Bowditch.

Sent-off: Kay.

Attendance: 10,011 (927 Burnley fans).
